A scientific study will be conducted to find out the cause of the increase in Covid-19 cases in the Eastern Black Sea.
According to the Ministry of Health’s weekly figures of the New Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) cases per 100 thousand population, efforts are ongoing to prevent the increase in the number of cases in Trabzon, Rize, Ordu, and Giresun in the Black Sea Region, where the incidence is the highest.
Prof. Faruk Aydın, Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology at the Medical School of Karadeniz Technical University (KTÜ) and Responsible Faculty Member of the Central Sterilization Unit at Farabi Hospital of KTÜ, said in his statement to the AA reporter that the number of cases in the region was 3-4 times higher than other cities, and that additional measures taken to reduce the number of cases are essential.
Stating that they had started working to figure out the causes of the increase in the number of cases in the Black Sea Region, Aydın said, “Why did we come up with higher figures in the last month, although the number of cases was similar in our region to that of others for 11 months during the pandemic? We thought, "Something must have happened in the last month". We were concerned, "Could there be a particular variant in our region?" We consulted officials working in the region to understand if there is a biological or genetic variation in the virus, and we constituted a team. We will try to isolate the viruses and conduct a full genetic analysis of them to reveal whether there is any possible variation.”
