In the outbreak of the new variant of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in Italy, 20,499 new cases have been detected in the last 24 hours.

According to data released daily by the Italian Health Ministry, 20,499 people were diagnosed with Covid-19 according to 325,404 tests conducted in the country in the last 24 hours. The upward trend in the number of daily cases, which began at the beginning of the week, continued today.

In the one-year period since the pandemic began, the total number of cases has reached 2,888,923. The number of active Covid-19 patients in the country increased to 404,664, and the number of those in intensive care to 2,194. The number of casualties increased by 253 to 97,227.

The number of those who recovered increased by 11,714 to 2,387,032. The widespread vaccination campaign against Covid-19 began on 27 December 2020, and the number of those vaccinated has been 3,998,727. It is reported that among those vaccinated, 1,370,373 received the second dose.

Emphasizing in his statement that the more contagious variants of Covid-19 have been causing increases in cases in schools, Gianni Rezza, Director of Epidemic Prevention at the Ministry of Health said: “It's always painful to talk about shutting down schools. But it is clear that these painful decisions need to be taken into account where the outbreak has come out and variants have been seen.”
